Prof. Walter Arnold | Material Science | Distinguished Scientist Award

Saarland University | Germany

Walter Arnold is a distinguished physicist with a diploma in Physics (1970) and a PhD in Solid State Physics (1974) from the Technical University Munich. He held prominent research positions across France, USA, Switzerland, and Germany, contributing significantly to solid state and applied physics. From 1980 to 2008, he led a department at Fraunhofer IZFP, Saarbrücken, focusing on non-destructive testing and materials characterization. Appointed professor of materials technology at Saarland University in 1989, he supervised over 165 undergraduate and 33 PhD theses and played active roles in international graduate programs and schools. He served on numerous advisory and review committees globally, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and EU research programs, and edited key journals in non-destructive evaluation. W. Arnold fostered Indo-German research collaborations and received the Heisenberg Medal for supporting international scientific cooperation. His prolific output includes ~190 peer-reviewed publications, ~20 reviews, 1 textbook, ~200 conference papers, 12 patents, and significant contributions to applied physics projects, including the Rosetta mission. He has been a guest professor at EPF Lausanne, Oxford University, and Georg-August Universität Göttingen, and continues to work as a researcher and consultant in non-destructive testing, applied physics, and nanotechnology.
